Festive spirit met scientific fascination as this year’s edition of the Christmas chemistry show “Chemical Life” transformed the stage of the Schauspielhaus into a lively laboratory. School classes and numerous other guests enjoyed an evening of surprising experiments and vivid insights into the chemistry of everyday life.

Once again, the University of Graz’s Centre for Chemistry Education brought its popular Christmas show to the Schauspielhaus. Under the motto “Chemical Life”, students from Philipp Spitzer’s course presented a wide range of experiments that illustrated how closely chemical processes are intertwined with our daily lives – especially during the holiday season. Luminous reactions, spectacular effects, and a humorous moderation made scientific phenomena accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages.

The programme was hosted by Philipp Spitzer together with television presenter Eva Pölzl. In her welcome address, Vice Rector Catherine Walter-Laager greeted the many visiting school classes and expressed her gratitude to the Schauspielhaus Graz for the long-standing and successful collaboration.

The intensive preparations clearly paid off: the show offered not only impressive demonstrations but also valuable ideas for classroom practice and several scientific “aha moments” to take home – a fitting end to the year in the spirit of science.

You can find more photos from the evening here.
