Heide Beranek-Knauer introduced the topic of citizen science in science communication and demonstrated how complex research content can be presented to non-scientific target groups. As an example, she presented the joint FWF project between the Open Lab Graz and the Institute of Molecular Biosciences, in which ribosome biogenesis was made more understandable to non-experts with the help of an escape game.
The focus of her presentation was on the citizen science aspect: pupils were actively involved in the development of the game. The project team was supported by Ludovico, the Graz toy library, which contributed its experience in the area of games.
Citizen science opens up ways to collaborate on scientific content and make it accessible to a wider audience.
