Our Accompanying Research on Science Communication and University Museums
How can scientific knowledge be communicated in an understandable and appealing way? What role do university museums play as interfaces between science and society?
Our research is dedicated to these central questions. We analyse innovative communication strategies and develop concepts for museum presentations. In this way, we create the basis for an open dialogue between science and society.

Science communication as an applied scientific discipline
Austria’s first Professorship for Science Communication.
The importance of science communication is not only growing in terms of interaction with society, it is also increasingly being taken into account in third-party funding applications and appointment procedures. However, communicating with target groups is often not that easy – science communication needs to be learnt. For this reason, we offer various programmes for different target groups. Whether you are studying at the University of Graz and attending one of our courses, working as a scientist yourself, or are simply interested in science communication – we have a suitable programme for everyone.
The discipline of general museology examines the relationship between humans and their historical and contemporary environment, from which objects relevant to everyday life are selected to be preserved, researched and communicated for posterity. It deals with historical, theoretical and applied perspectives.
With this in mind, courses from the research areas of the university museums are offered at the Department of History and the Department of Art History at the University of Graz. These also include applied projects, such as museum conservation and digitisation of university cultural heritage.
